Oh, Insomnia... I see you've come to visit again. How lovely.
We've come a long way, haven't we? I no longer stubbornly lie in bed, eyes shut tight, willing you to give up and stop knocking on my brain's front door. No, you are too persistent. Now when I hear you knocking, I calmly get up and patiently entertain your visit until you grow bored and let Sleep back in to finish his job.
Oh, when I think of all the things we could have accomplished together during your nightly visits... How much closer to finishing my PhD would I have been had I spent our time these last few months reading and calculating and writing? How many loads of laundry and other chores could I have finished while you were here to help me? But no, I have spent our time in a sleepy daze, often on the couch (now that I've learned that ignoring you doesn't work) with a bowl of cereal and a purring Hera-cat. She doesn't mind when you come to visit me! We've watched some dumb TV, finished a crossword puzzle to two, read some books...
I often wonder why it is you come to visit me so often - why me, why tonight? Can't you see I need my sleep? Our nightly escapades leave me very tired during the day; sometimes I am so exhausted that I think there is no way I'll hear you at my door tonight, that surely I'll just sleep through till morning. But no, something always gets me up. Lately I suspect my shrinking bladder is probably most to blame (it is a light sleeper!), but I know it cannot help it, and I'm not really looking for something to blame. One way or another, you'd get me up.
I am fully confident that this will not last forever, that eventually you'll come to visit less often, or stop altogether. And while I'll be glad for an uninterrupted night (one of these days!), I suppose a very small part of me will miss you a teeny tiny little bit. When the house is quiet and everyone is asleep and it's just me and you and Hera, and I'm not yelling at you to leave, our time together is actually fairly calming and peaceful. By now, I even look forward to your visits - not happily mind you, but with some acceptance and anticipation. I know you'll come to visit more than once in the next few nights, and that this will likely go on for at least a few more weeks. I know that not even the dogs will bother to lift an ear when they hear me get up to answer your call. And I know that I'll have an hour or three with you before Sleep finds me again and you quietly let yourself out the front door.
