Ah, joys of parenthood

Calvin vomited massive amounts of baby vomit mere seconds after taking this picture. Sorry kiddo.

We're all sleeping a little better at night

A few nights ago we started putting Calvin to bed in his bassinet in his room, alone. Maybe its a little early to be doing this, maybe not. But we weren't getting very good sleep in the few hours available by sleeping in the same room. Calvin is a noisy sleeper! He grunts and squeals and snorts and coughs and squirms, all of which make me want to get up and check on him. And I'm sure our tossing and turning at his noises were making him wake up too. He's had a routine of crying/fussiness between about 11pm and 3am, which made us hesitate to do this sooner, but with the monitor we are able to go to him when ever he starts to cry, so it was time to try.

So we put Calvin to bed on his own one evening late last week and it was amazing. He was out, sound asleep! He was so quiet that we were actually worried something was wrong and even went into his room and listened to his breathing, took his temperature, and practically woke him up (I totally felt like Aurora in Terms of Endearment). This happened two nights in a row - all was well both times, and Calvin has had a few good nights with no endless bouts of crying. :) Sleep is still limited because he starts a new meal every 3-4 hours on average, each taking about an hour or more to finish and get him back to sleep, but the sleep in between meals is a lot better.

Calvin is one month old

It's hard to believe that it has already been one month since Calvin was born, one month since that whole ordeal in the hospital, one full month of sleepless nights and dirty diapers and adorable faces and snuggling up in my arms for a nap. Already the whole labor experience is starting to seem not that bad, my brain is quickly replacing all those memories with happy ones of our little baby - I'm pretty sure it is programmed to do that, otherwise I don't think there would be very many families with more than one kid. Not that I want to go through that again for a very long time, but I don't think about how unpleasant it was much anymore. Now I'm much more focused on the current lack of sleep...

Calvin is doing great, and is growing really well. At his 2-week check-up, Calvin had gained over a pound since birth. He weighed 7 lbs 13 oz, compared to his birthweight of 6 lbs 10 oz, not to mention the weight he lost in the first couple days of life. His 1-mo checkup was today - he continued to impress with his ability to grow (it's all that sleeping he's doing). This morning he weighed in at 9 lbs 10 oz - nearly 2 pounds heavier than 2 weeks ago! We were shocked. So it's safe to say the breastfeeding is going well, which is a huge relief! He's now 50th percentile in weight and 75th percentile in length (21.75 in) for his age. He's starting to hold his head up pretty well, though it is still a bit wobbly, and he smiles a lot, just not at us or in response to anything other than what he might be doing in his diaper.

Calvin's due date was a week ago yesterday. In honor of that momentous occasion, he received his first piece of mail - his social security card.

For a while Calvin would sleep in a Thinker pose with a fist under his chin (March 1).
He's learning early how to play games - Puerto Rico and Munchkin a couple weeks ago (March 6).
Calvin wore green on St Patricks Day. And I promise he does open his eyes occasionally, just not when I have a camera around.
